Quick Breather

It had a few days since I last had the chance to blog. I had been busy with work mainly. I had three calls in between my return from Fraser's Hill and Christmas. I was now on the second and it had been a busy one.

At the moment, I was waiting for patients to be transferred to the ward. Finally I had some time to sit at the lounge and catch something on TV.

Full clinic tomorrow followed by Idlan's khatam on Sunday. Anita had been occupied with that and she was getting some help from my in-law's maid. It looked like I wouldn't be much of a help since I'll probably be sleeping tomorrow.

Better enjoy the movie while I've got the chance.

The Martian

The last time I felt excited about a movie was while anticipating "Interstellar". It was an interesting enough movie as a concept but it ended up being rather heavy and technical, similar to the previous Anthony Nolan movies. It had many layers and I couldn't help leaving the theatre in a state of wonderment. Certainly it was not what I expected in terms of narrative.

A couple of the actors from that movie, Jessica Chastain and Matt Damon teamed up again in The Martian, and with Ridley Scott behind the cameras, I was worried that this will again be another "Prometheus".

Luckily it wasn't this time around. What we got here was a future classic although I must admit the science behind the movie was rather suspect. Certainly Interstellar was more compelling. More or less, it was certainly a ride, and the fact that Anita was not the kind of person who enjoyed sci-fi, she was carried away at times.

Certainly the nerd in me connected with the movie and I do not have any hesitation in recommending this movie. It was certainly much lighter than both Prometheus and Interstellar.

Avengers are Back

Age of Ultron would be the next instalment of the Avengers series. And it was coming out in a couple of weeks. Looks like the media hype was at full swing.

There was plenty of adverts going out on billboard, but the most cheesy one was definitely the exhibits and memorabilia at Mid Valley Megamall.

There was plenty of merchandise as well as games, all for good fun. Apart from giant replicas of Hulk and Ironman, nothing really caught my fancy. They only had a small Loki doll on show. If Tom Hiddleston were to make an appearance, then that would be something else. I would queue for that...

Even Idlan didn't find the exhibits to be that interesting. But he was looking forward to watch the movie. So, I guessed mission accomplished as far as the organisers were concerned. ‎

Interstellar

I went into the movie last night expecting a sci-fi ride. One of those standard Hollywood fare with spectacular special effect. But what I got coming out of this movie was a more philosophical debate. A rather deep one at that. Not something I bargained for.

But this was not to say that the movie was a farce.

I would put this movie on the same level of Contact, which for me one of the best sci-fi movie I had ever watched. Again not for the special effects, but on the philosophical conundrum at the back end.

A lot of the concepts were far fetched. May not even be scientifically true as well, but intriguing none the less. Although it made more sense than Inception.

Typical of Nolan's movie, one had to pay attention at opening scenes as they would return later.

I felt that I got more than I bargained for at the end of the movie. The closure was satisfactory but still there were questions unanswered. Would I recommend the movie to everybody? Not really. Those not interested would definitely doze off halfway. But for me, I would definitely be getting the DVD when it comes out ...

Meet Lucy

After watching some trailers, I thought Lucy looked quite interesting. Not really a fan of Luc Besson, the subject matter seemed original enough. So, I convinced Anita to come along to watch the movie with me after we were done with furniture hunting.

It lived up to my expectations. And the guy behind the counter who sold us the tickets wasn't joking when he said that the movie was not suitable for children. He was spot on. The action were rather brutal. But the narrative was good. Illogical, but I was game for the ride.

After enjoying some trailers, there was an announcement for everyone to stand up for Negaraku. I read about this somewhere. Slowly Malaysia was turning into North Korea, but maybe the Menteri got their heads screwed on right and knew what they were doing. Personally I felt that this was a hollow gesture, but who am I to judge. I was here for a movie after a long weekend.

Would I recommend everybody to watch it? Well, I would definitely watch it again if it played on Astro, but I don't think that this movie would be everybody's cup of tea.
